The Psalms of David

Published in 1801 by the Hartford firm of Hudson and Goodwin, this edition of The Psalms of David serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Isaac Watts's nonconformist hymnody in early American religious life. Watts, an English theologian, originally authored these metrical paraphrases in 1719, aiming to adapt the Psalms to Christian worship by emphasizing New Testament themes. By the dawn of the nineteenth century, his work had become a staple of colonial and post-revolutionary American hymnals, bridging the gap between traditional Psalm-singing and modern devotional poetry.

The printing house of Hudson and Goodwin was central to Connecticut's intellectual and religious culture during this period, known for their meticulous work on influential texts of the time. The design of this volume reflects the functional, utilitarian aesthetic characteristic of early nineteenth-century American religious printing, prioritizing legibility and endurance for regular use in congregations and private study. It represents a significant shift toward the domestication of liturgy, as such volumes were increasingly produced for use within the private sphere of the home as much as the public space of the meetinghouse.
