The Pseudo-Turpin chronicle in Iceland

Published in 1959 by London Mediæval Studies at University College, this work by Peter Godfrey Foote examines the Icelandic reception and translation of the Pseudo-Turpin chronicle, a legendary 12th-century Latin text concerning Charlemagne. Foote, a distinguished scholar of Old Norse philology, composed this study to trace the cultural integration of continental European chivalric narratives into the Icelandic literary landscape, shedding light on the mechanics of translation and manuscript preservation in medieval Scandinavia.

The publication was designed as an academic monograph, emphasizing clear, rigorous philological analysis over aesthetic ornamentation. It was produced for a specialized audience of medievalists and historians of literature. At the time of its release, the text was well-received by the academic community for its contribution to the understanding of how foreign literary forms were adapted to fit the distinct linguistic and narrative traditions of Iceland, establishing Foote as a key authority on the subject.
