The Select Works of Mr. John Dennis, in Two Volumes

The Select Works of Mr. John Dennis was originally compiled and published in 1718, reflecting the critical and dramatic contributions of John Dennis, an influential if often controversial English literary critic and playwright of the early eighteenth century. Known for his fierce, polemical style and his long-standing public feuds with contemporaries like Alexander Pope, Dennis occupied a distinct space in the Augustan age, often positioning himself as a defender of traditional classical standards in drama and poetry.

The 2018 edition published by Gale Ecco, Print Editions, is a modern scholarly reproduction designed to preserve rare historical texts for academic research. By utilizing high-resolution scanning of original eighteenth-century volumes, these editions aim to provide students and historians with accessible copies of works that might otherwise remain confined to special collections. The presentation focuses on legibility and archival integrity, ensuring that Dennis's original arguments and observations remain available for study in contemporary libraries.
