The Shengold Jewish Encyclopedia

The Shengold Jewish Encyclopedia, edited by Mordecai Schreiber and published in 2007, was designed to provide a comprehensive, single-volume reference guide to Jewish history, culture, and religious practice. It serves as a modern successor to the tradition of encyclopedic works focused on Jewish life, aiming to distill vast amounts of historical data into an accessible format for contemporary readers. The project reflects Schreiber's long-standing dedication to Jewish literacy and the desire to create a resource that bridges traditional scholarship with modern educational needs.

In terms of its conception, the volume was intended to offer a balanced overview that encompasses the global Jewish experience, spanning thousands of years of tradition while addressing modern developments. The design emphasizes clarity and brevity, favoring concise entries that allow for quick navigation, a choice that contrasts with the multi-volume academic encyclopedias common in the field. Upon its release, it was well-received by libraries and educational institutions as a practical, reliable entry point for those seeking foundational knowledge about the Jewish heritage.
