The Story of Cole Younger, By Himself

The Story of Cole Younger, By Himself was originally published in 1903 as a direct response to sensationalist dime novels and public misconceptions regarding the activities of the James-Younger Gang. Seeking to reclaim his narrative after serving over twenty years in the Minnesota State Penitentiary, Cole Younger penned this autobiography to provide his personal account of the post-Civil War era in Missouri, detailing his transition from a Confederate guerrilla to an outlaw involved in bank and train robberies.

The design and tone of the original work reflect the sensibilities of early twentieth-century biographical literature, prioritizing a firsthand, defensive perspective on the violent history of the American West. While modern editions like the 2009 reprint exist to keep this historical primary source accessible to contemporary researchers and Western history enthusiasts, the core text remains a significant, albeit subjective, document concerning the internal justifications and life story of one of the era’s most notorious figures.
