The Virginians

Serialized between 1857 and 1859, The Virginians was written by William Makepeace Thackeray as a sequel to his earlier historical novel, The History of Henry Esmond. Set in the mid-18th century during the American Revolutionary era, the narrative follows the descendants of the Esmond family as they navigate the shifting loyalties and cultural tensions between Britain and its American colonies. Thackeray, who illustrated the novel himself, intended for the work to capture the domestic and social complexities of the period with his signature satirical lens.

Upon its initial publication, the novel received a mixed but generally respectful reception from contemporary critics, who praised Thackeray's meticulous historical research while occasionally debating the density of his prose. The International Book Company edition provided here is a later reprint, representative of the widespread 19th-century efforts to make Victorian literature accessible to the general public through affordable, mass-market bindings.
