Three vagabonds in Friesland

Three Vagabonds in Friesland was first published in 1907, capturing the travel experiences of H. F. Tomalin during his exploration of the Dutch province of Friesland. The narrative reflects the Edwardian era’s fascination with travelogues and the romanticized discovery of rural European landscapes, offering a vivid account of the region's unique culture, waterways, and local life at the turn of the century.

The volume is notable for its illustrative contributions, which were provided by Arthur Marshall. These illustrations were intended to complement the text by grounding the reader in the atmospheric scenery of the Frisian countryside. As part of a genre that sought to blend personal travel memoir with artistic observation, the work was received as a charming contribution to the literature of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century travel, documenting a world that was rapidly changing.
