Twelve years a slave

Twelve Years a Slave was published in 1853, shortly after Solomon Northup regained his freedom from twelve years of enslavement in Louisiana. Northup worked with writer David Wilson to document his harrowing experiences, intending the narrative to serve as both a personal testament and a powerful abolitionist tool. The book was released during a period of intense national debate over slavery in the United States, and its graphic, detailed account of the plantation system helped galvanize public sentiment against the institution in the years leading up to the Civil War.

The narrative was produced during a mid-19th-century surge in slave narratives, which were often vetted by white editors to ensure their credibility to contemporary audiences. Northup's account is noted for its precision and observational clarity regarding the logistics of the domestic slave trade. While it initially achieved significant commercial success and critical attention, the book faded from public memory for many decades before being rediscovered by historians in the 1960s and eventually finding a massive new readership following the 2013 film adaptation.
