Union Jack

Union Jack, published by Douglas & McIntyre in 1988, serves as a significant visual document of the iconic British flag's evolution and cultural impact. The book emerged during a period of renewed interest in British iconography, aiming to deconstruct the heraldic history and social symbolism inherent in the Union Flag. It functions both as a historical survey and a design analysis, contextualizing how the emblem transitioned from a formal royal standard to a ubiquitous motif in global fashion, art, and political protest.

Jack Munro curated this collection with an eye toward the intersection of graphic design and national identity. By gathering various iterations of the flag, the work provides a look at how visual shorthand functions in the public consciousness. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its accessible presentation and its ability to bridge the gap between academic heraldry and popular visual culture, solidifying its place as a reference for enthusiasts of graphic design and British history.
