Vladas Mikenas

Published in 1987 by the Moscow-based state publisher Fizkulʹtura i sport, this book serves as a retrospective on the career of Vladas Mikenas, a legendary Lithuanian chess master and International Master who was a central figure in the Soviet chess scene for decades. It was released during a period when the Soviet state actively documented the contributions of its most influential chess pioneers, aiming to preserve the tactical methodologies and game analysis of players who helped establish the nation's dominance in the sport.

The volume functions as a comprehensive collection of Mikenas's most significant games, annotated to highlight his aggressive, creative style—a departure from the more rigid positional play often favored during the era. Designed with the standard aesthetic of mid-1980s Soviet sports literature, the book relies on clear algebraic notation and rigorous analysis intended for serious students and competitors of the game. It was well-received by the chess community as a vital reference for understanding the development of the Mikenas Variation in the English Opening.
