Wash Day Diaries

Wash Day Diaries originated as a self-published zine titled Wash Day, which Jamila Rowser created in 2018 to celebrate the Black hair care experience. Following its successful independent debut, Rowser expanded the narrative into this graphic novel anthology, collaborating with artist Robyn Smith. The work was published by Chronicle Books in 2022 as a continuation of their mission to explore the intersection of beauty, culture, and friendship within the Black community.

The book utilizes a vignette-based structure to follow four friends living in the Bronx, using the ritual of wash day as a narrative anchor to discuss mental health, relationships, and self-care. Robyn Smith’s illustrative style is characterized by a warm, expressive aesthetic that captures the nuances of Afro-textured hair. The collection received critical acclaim upon its release for its grounded, authentic portrayal of Black womanhood and its success in elevating a daily domestic routine into a meaningful cultural touchstone.
