Where it came from
The Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego board game was released in 1993 by University Games, capitalizing on the massive popularity of the educational software franchise developed by Brøderbund. At the time, the series had become a cultural phenomenon by blending mystery and geography education, prompting a transition into physical tabletop gaming. This board game was designed to replicate the digital experience of tracking down Carmen and her V.I.L.E. henchmen, requiring players to utilize regional knowledge and deductive reasoning to solve cases across the United States.
The design of the game mirrored the aesthetic and tone of the software, emphasizing detective work and map navigation. It was intended to offer a tactile, multi-player version of the solo computer game, allowing friends and families to compete in real-time. Upon its release, it was well-received by parents and educators who favored its curriculum-based approach, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for those who grew up playing the series in classrooms and homes during the early 1990s.
