Where it came from
Released in 1994, this official sourcebook was published to capitalize on the immense popularity of the Carmen Sandiego franchise, which had successfully transitioned from educational video games into a staple of American pop culture. At a time when home computing and edutainment software were reaching their peak in classrooms and households, the book served as both a companion guide and a bridge for fans of the recently launched television series and the core game series developed by Broderbund.
Written by Steve Bennett, the sourcebook functions as a deep dive into the lore of the Acme Detective Agency and the elusive Carmen Sandiego herself. The design leans into the franchise's signature aesthetic of globetrotting mystery and world-traveler motifs. It was received by the target audience of children and young teenagers as a helpful tactical manual for tracking the villainous V.I.L.E. henchmen across international borders, successfully blending trivia, geographic facts, and narrative world-building.
