Wolfgang Laib

Published in 1985 by Cantz, this monograph serves as a seminal documentation of the early career and artistic philosophy of German sculptor Wolfgang Laib. Produced during a period when Laib was gaining significant international recognition for his minimalist, ritualistic works, the book captures his preoccupation with ephemeral natural materials such as pollen, milk, and beeswax. The publication reflects the deliberate, meditative quality of his practice, which contrasts starkly with the more industrial artistic movements dominant in the late twentieth century.

The book’s design and editorial focus aim to mirror the austerity of Laib’s installations, prioritizing silence and sensory experience over traditional academic critique. By assembling documentation of his foundational works, the volume provides a critical window into the transition of conceptual art toward a more spiritual and ecological consciousness. It has since become a key reference point for scholars and collectors interested in the intersection of contemporary sculpture and Eastern philosophical influences.
