Where it came from
Published in 2001 by Ink-Tree, Xenon serves as a definitive documentation of Jenny Holzer's large-scale light projections that defined her practice throughout the 1990s. The book captures the ephemeral nature of these installations, where Holzer projected cryptic, provocative, and rhythmic texts onto public architectural landmarks and natural landscapes globally, including sites in Florence, Berlin, and Rio de Janeiro.
Edited by Cristina Bechtler, the volume acts as a critical archive of Holzer's transition from her early street-level 'Truisms' to immersive, site-specific light environments. The design of the book emphasizes the atmospheric tension of her work, balancing photographic documentation of the projections against the textual weight of her writing, ultimately framing the light-based work as a monumental intervention in the dialogue between language and public space.
