Where it came from
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech, designed by the architectural firm Studio KO, is a landmark homage to the iconic French fashion designer. This monograph documents the inception and creation of the museum, which opened in 2017 near the Jardin Majorelle, a site deeply intertwined with Saint Laurent’s creative life. Published by Phaidon in 2022, the book explores how the architects utilized terracotta brick and local stone to evoke the textures of both Moroccan craft and the intricate fabrics of haute couture.
Studio KO, led by Karl Fournier and Olivier Marty, sought to create a structure that felt like a bridge between Paris and Marrakech rather than a foreign imposition. The design utilizes a pattern of cubic volumes to mirror the weaving techniques of textiles, a thematic choice that resonates with Saint Laurent’s own design philosophy. Upon its release, the volume was well-received by critics for its evocative photography and its ability to capture the interplay between architectural minimalism and the vibrant, artistic legacy of its namesake.
