Where it came from
A Live Vitalization For Japan was released by drummer Steve Smith and his fusion ensemble Vital Information in 2011. The album was conceived as a direct response to the devastating Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan earlier that year. The band, which has long maintained a significant following in the Japanese jazz-fusion market, dedicated the recording to the relief efforts, directing proceeds from the project to support those affected by the disaster.
The album serves as a document of the group's high-energy improvisational chemistry, capturing live performances that highlight Smith's intricate polyrhythmic style and the ensemble's tight, complex arrangements. Known for blending jazz, funk, and rock elements, Vital Information utilized this release to showcase both their technical proficiency and their commitment to social causes, offering a soundscape that emphasizes resilience and solidarity through technical virtuosity.
