Where it came from
A Mountain Is a Mammal was released in 2006 on the San Diego-based label Accretions, an independent outlet dedicated to experimental, jazz, and improvised music. This project serves as a collaborative exploration between percussionist Mike Pride and multi-instrumentalist Marcos Fernandes, capturing a moment in the mid-2000s downtown experimental scene where acoustic structures met electronic sound design.
The album is noted for its textured, abstract approach to percussion and environmental soundscapes. Fernandes, who founded Accretions, often sought to blur the lines between traditional musicianship and sonic art, while Pride brought his background in free jazz and avant-garde percussion to the partnership. The work is widely regarded by enthusiasts of the label as a representative example of the improvisational experimentation that defined the collective's output during that era.
