Where it came from
Released in 1998 on the René Gailly label, Atmospheres highlights the versatility of the Belgian Air Force Royal Symphonic Band under the direction of saxophonist and composer Alain Crepin. The project was conceived to showcase the sophisticated capabilities of a modern military symphonic band, blending classical refinement with the distinct tonal colorations of the saxophone, an instrument for which Crepin is internationally celebrated.
The album serves as a definitive document of Crepin’s multifaceted work, featuring his own compositions and arrangements that bridge symphonic band traditions and contemporary wind ensemble repertoire. The production sought to elevate the profile of the Belgian Air Force ensemble, moving beyond ceremonial function toward a rigorous artistic endeavor that was well-received by wind band enthusiasts and academic circles for its technical precision and expressive, atmospheric depth.
