Where it came from
Archipelago X was released in 2021 on John Zorn's Tzadik label as part of the label's ongoing commitment to avant-garde and experimental chamber music. The album features a collaborative trio consisting of electronic musician Ikue Mori, pianist Brian Marsella, and percussionist Sae Hashimoto. The project reflects the label's ethos of bringing together disparate, highly skilled improvisers to explore atmospheric textures and minimalist sonic structures within a contemporary classical and jazz framework.
The album's design and aesthetic identity are consistent with the minimalist, stark visual language characteristic of the Tzadik catalog, which often emphasizes typography and abstract imagery to allow the music to remain the primary focus. While specific details regarding the graphic designer are rarely highlighted in the label's press materials, the packaging is intended to evoke the contemplative and oceanic quality implied by the title. Upon its release, the trio was lauded by listeners for its intricate interplay, blending Mori’s signature electronic processing with the organic, nuanced acoustic contributions of Marsella and Hashimoto.
