Where it came from
B-Sides was released in 2008 by the indie-rock project Words to a Film Score, led by musician and songwriter Adam Selzer. As the title implies, the collection serves as a retrospective compilation of rarities, unreleased demos, and B-sides that were recorded during the sessions for the project's earlier studio albums. It captures the lo-fi, introspective aesthetic common to the Pacific Northwest indie scene of the mid-2000s, emphasizing raw acoustic arrangements and intimate lyrical storytelling.
The album was designed to offer fans a deeper look into the developmental process of the project, documenting the tracks that did not fit the thematic scope of the primary studio releases. Reception within the independent music community was characteristically quiet but appreciative, as the compilation provided context for the project's evolving sound. The presentation is stripped-back, reflecting the band's preference for minimalist, home-recorded production values that prioritize emotional resonance over high-fidelity engineering.
