Bell-E 2 Bell-E

Released in 1996 through the German label ZYX Music, this project represents a unique moment in the later career of hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa. Moving away from his foundational electro-funk sound, Bambaataa sought to experiment with evolving European dance sensibilities, specifically the burgeoning trance and hard-house scenes that were dominating the continent at the time. The collaboration with the group Khayan & The New World Power reflects Bambaataa's ongoing mission to blend world music influences with electronic production, an approach he championed throughout his tenure with the Zulu Nation.

The album reflects the distinctive, high-energy aesthetic of mid-90s European dance music, characterized by synthesized bell motifs and driving, repetitive beats. Designed for club environments rather than traditional hip-hop radio, the project was an effort to bridge the gap between Bambaataa's legendary status and the commercial electronic market in Germany. While it is considered an obscure entry in his vast discography, the record serves as a snapshot of the era's cross-genre experimentation, where legacy artists often explored the intersection of techno-pop and rhythmic dance music.
