Where it came from
This 2011 release from the Dutch budget label Disky serves as a retrospective compilation of the work of Bert Kaempfert, the German orchestra leader and composer who rose to international prominence during the 1960s. Kaempfert was renowned for his lush, easy-listening arrangements that blended big band aesthetics with melodic pop sensibilities, most famously evidenced in hits like 'Wonderland by Night' and his work with Frank Sinatra on 'Strangers in the Night'.
Disky Records specialized in issuing archival material, often repackaging classic recordings for mid-market distribution. This particular collection was designed to introduce or preserve Kaempfert’s mid-century sound for a contemporary audience, utilizing existing masters from his prolific Polydor catalog. By the time of this release, Kaempfert's legacy was firmly established as a pioneer of the 'sweet soul' orchestral sound, and compilations of this nature reflect the enduring demand for his melodic, instrumental approach to jazz and pop standards.
