Where it came from
Released in 2004 to coincide with the biographical film Beyond the Sea, this soundtrack serves as a musical tribute to the life and career of Bobby Darin. The project was spearheaded by Kevin Spacey, who directed the film and performed the vocals himself, aiming to capture the authentic arrangements and big-band swing aesthetic of the 1950s and 1960s.
The musical direction was handled by British conductor John Wilson, who worked closely with his orchestra to recreate the lush, orchestral jazz sound synonymous with Darin's era. Upon its release, the record was noted for its technical faithfulness to the original arrangements, though it remains tethered to the film's broader critical reception and the specific artistic choice of having the lead actor provide the vocal performances.
