Provenance

Where it came from

Released by Harmonia Mundi in 2024, Bill & Friends serves as a celebratory anthology centered around the prolific harpsichordist and conductor William Christie. The collection highlights Christie's long-standing dedication to French Baroque music, showcasing a series of intimate collaborations that draw upon the talent of younger performers he has mentored throughout his career. It reflects the collaborative spirit of Les Arts Florissants, the ensemble he founded in 1979, which has been instrumental in the historical performance movement.

The album features performances by Gwendoline Blondeel, Juliette Mey, Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Emmanuel Resche, Myriam Rignol, Thomas Dunford, and Justin Taylor. Curated to honor Christie's enduring legacy, the program leans into the nuances of seventeenth-century airs de cour and instrumental works. The design and selection of pieces are intended to mirror the informal, pedagogical, and highly artistic environment of the William Christie garden festivals in Thiré, aiming to capture the spontaneity and technical finesse that define Christie's interpretive approach to the repertoire.
