Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2007 by Blue Note Records, this compilation serves as a tribute to the prolific jazz composer Billy Strayhorn, the longtime collaborator of Duke Ellington. The album was curated to celebrate Strayhorn’s sophisticated harmonic language and lyrical sensitivity, bringing together a cross-generational ensemble of modern jazz voices including pianists Bill Charlap and Hank Jones, vocalist Dianne Reeves, and saxophonist Joe Lovano.

The album’s design and selection process aimed to capture the atmospheric, introspective quality associated with Strayhorn’s seminal composition, 'Lush Life.' By juxtaposing established masters like Hank Jones with contemporary figures like Elvis Costello, the project frames Strayhorn's work as a bridge between the classic era of big band arrangements and the vocal-centric jazz standards of the 21st century. It was received as a respectful and understated homage, praised for its focus on the intricate craftsmanship of the source material.
