Carmen Suite No. 1 - Carmen Suite No. 2 - L'Arlésienne Suite No. 1 - L'Arlésienne Suite No. 2

This 2001 release from the budget-conscious label Musicbank compiles Georges Bizet's most celebrated orchestral suites. Compiled at the turn of the millennium, this collection reflects a period when classical music labels were increasingly repurposing public domain recordings to reach a broader audience through accessible, low-cost CD compilations. The curation focuses on the evocative, melodic themes of Carmen and L'Arlésienne, which remain cornerstones of the French Romantic repertoire.

The suites themselves originate from Bizet's stage works, with the L'Arlésienne suites being arranged from incidental music he composed for Alphonse Daudet's play, and the Carmen suites being instrumental selections later synthesized from his famed opera. These suites were designed to bring the dramatic flair of the theater into the concert hall, relying on bold orchestration and folkloric influence to maintain popularity. As a Musicbank issue, the release is characterized by its utilitarian design, prioritizing the preservation of these enduring compositions for casual listeners over the specialized sonic nuances found in premium collector editions.
