Where it came from
The self-titled debut from the Corey Dennison Band was released in 2016 through the historic Chicago-based Delmark Records, a label instrumental in documenting the evolution of the city's blues scene. The album serves as a definitive introduction to Dennison, a guitarist who honed his craft as a longtime sideman for Carl Weathersby, blending traditional Chicago blues structures with contemporary soul and rhythm and blues influences.
The production and arrangement of the record reflect a commitment to the raw, ensemble-driven sound that Delmark built its reputation on. By capturing the tight chemistry between Dennison and his bandmates—most notably keyboardist Gerry Hundt—the album was designed to showcase the fluidity of a working club band. Upon release, it was well-received by roots music critics, who highlighted it as a modern entry in the storied lineage of Chicago blues, focusing on Dennison's expressive vocal delivery and precise, biting guitar work.
