Where it came from
Dornenvögel is the sixth studio album by the Austrian atmospheric black metal project Karg, the primary solo endeavor of musician J.J. released through the German label Art of Propaganda in 2018. The album marks a significant point in the project's evolution, further refining a sound that blends post-black metal textures with intense, melancholic emotionality. It reflects the artist's thematic focus on existential despair, loss, and the darker nuances of the human condition, continuing a long-standing tradition of introspective songwriting within the subgenre.
The album is noted for its evocative and somber aesthetic, which complements the raw and atmospheric musical compositions characteristic of J.J.'s work. The design and visual presentation were crafted to mirror the bleak yet deeply melodic nature of the music, effectively establishing a cohesive atmospheric landscape. Upon its release, Dornenvögel was received favorably within the European black metal scene for its dense production and the authentic, tortured vocal delivery that has become a hallmark of the Karg identity.
