Excerpts: Der Fliegende Holländer, Parsifal, Tannhäuser, Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg

Released in 1991 by the New Zealand label Ode Records, this recording highlights the collaboration between the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and German conductor Heinz Wallberg. The disc gathers excerpts from four of Richard Wagner’s most iconic operas, showcasing the dramatic range of the composer's work from the sweeping romanticism of Tannhäuser to the spiritual gravity of Parsifal. It served as a significant vehicle for international soloists, including soprano Alessandra Marc and baritone Donald McIntyre, to present Wagnerian highlights to a broader audience during a period of active orchestral exploration in the Pacific region.

The production design reflects the minimalist aesthetic common to early 1990s classical CDs, prioritizing the prominence of the composer's name and the prestigious lineup of performers. By selecting pivotal scenes rather than complete works, the producers intended to distill the emotional intensity of Wagner's mythic storytelling for listeners seeking an accessible entry point into the German operatic tradition. The recording was well-regarded for the clarity of its orchestral delivery, marking a noteworthy instance of New Zealand’s national orchestra engaging with the core repertoire of the European canon under the baton of an experienced Wagnerian specialist.
