Provenance

Where it came from

This release documents a historic cultural moment from May 1957, when Glenn Gould became the first North American musician to perform in the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The recording captures an informal, wide-ranging Q&A session at the Moscow Conservatory, where Gould discussed Western contemporary music and his interpretive philosophy with inquisitive students. It provides a rare glimpse into the intellectual exchange between the eccentric Canadian pianist and the disciplined musical youth of the Soviet era.

Originally surfacing as a historical archival discovery, this material was issued by the Russian state label Melodiya to preserve the spoken-word legacy of Gould’s visit. The production was intended for serious archivists and admirers of Gould’s distinct conversational style, offering listeners an unscripted look at his personality away from the concert stage. The release is valued primarily as a primary source document that illuminates the tension and fascination surrounding Western classical musicians operating behind the Iron Curtain.
