Great Day! Indra Thomas Sings Spirituals

Released in 2012 on the Delos label, Great Day! features soprano Indra Thomas performing a collection of traditional African American spirituals. The album serves as a showcase for Thomas’s celebrated operatic voice, which has graced major stages including the Metropolitan Opera. The project was conceived to preserve the emotional depth and historical significance of these songs through a classical lens, emphasizing arrangements that highlight the vocal prowess required to convey the weight and hope inherent in the spiritual tradition.

The album features piano accompaniment by Joel A. Martin, providing an understated framework that allows Thomas’s rich, resonant delivery to take center stage. Within the classical recording industry, the release was received as a respectful and technically accomplished tribute to a genre often relegated to smaller ensembles. By integrating these pieces into a formal studio recording, Delos aimed to introduce a wider classical audience to the nuances of spiritual performance as interpreted by an artist known for her dramatic intensity.
