Where it came from
Released in 2007 by ECM New Series, this album features Gidon Kremer and his chamber ensemble, Kremerata Baltica, performing the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and Gustav Mahler. The collection was conceived to highlight the profound emotional and structural parallels between the two composers, focusing on their shared ability to convey profound irony and existential weight within the framework of symphonic and chamber traditions.
The recording is noted for its characteristically pristine and atmospheric production, a hallmark of Manfred Eicher’s ECM label. Gidon Kremer, who founded Kremerata Baltica in 1997 to foster young talent from the Baltic states, sought to strip away the over-romanticized performance traditions often associated with Mahler and Shostakovich, favoring instead a lean, incisive, and deeply communicative approach that emphasizes the stark modernity inherent in their respective soundscapes.
