Where it came from
Released in 2017 on the Finnish label Eclipse Music, the album I marks a significant entry in the discography of saxophonist and composer Pauli Lyytinen. As a leading figure in the contemporary Nordic jazz scene, Lyytinen crafted this record to showcase his Magnetia Orkesteri ensemble, a group noted for its adventurous approach to improvisation and ensemble interplay. The album is characteristic of the creative output coming out of the Tampere-based label, which emphasizes experimental and modern jazz compositions that push beyond traditional genre constraints.
The musical design of the project centers on Lyytinen’s ability to balance intricate, structured melodies with the spontaneous energy of his quartet. By utilizing a distinct instrumental lineup, the compositions strive for a raw, acoustic clarity that reflects the aesthetic values of Finnish avant-garde jazz. Upon its release, the album was received as a cohesive demonstration of Lyytinen's maturation as a bandleader, earning recognition within European jazz circles for its imaginative arrangements and the technical proficiency of the ensemble members.
