Where it came from
The 2015 reissue of I, originally released in 1983, serves as a significant archival look at Steve Arrington’s transition from his tenure with Slave to his successful solo career. This album captured the burgeoning intersection of funk, post-disco, and early electronic soul, reflecting the evolving soundscapes of the early 1980s music scene in the United States.
The album features the production sensibilities that defined Arrington’s signature sound—layered synthesizers and deep, groove-oriented basslines. Upon its initial release, Arrington was praised for his ability to blend traditional R&B sensibilities with the experimental technological spirit of the era, and this 2015 collection remains a staple for collectors interested in the foundational influence of boogie and funk on modern dance music.
