Where it came from
Released by Minos-EMI in 1995, this compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the work of Dimitris Gogos, widely known by his stage name Bayanteras. As one of the preeminent figures of the Piraeus-style rebetiko movement during the 1930s and 1940s, his compositions are celebrated for their authentic urban folk sound and poetic reflection of the life of the Greek working class. This collection was compiled to preserve his historical contributions to Greek popular music for a modern audience.
The production sought to remaster archival recordings, ensuring that the unique timbre of his voice and his signature bouzouki playing remained clear for listeners decades later. By gathering his most influential tracks under the Minos-EMI label, the release functioned as a vital cultural archive. It was received by enthusiasts and critics alike as an essential document of the rebetiko genre, reinforcing his legacy as both a masterful songwriter and a poignant chronicler of the social realities of his era.
