I Cry, I Smile

I Cry, I Smile was released in 2012 by Narada Michael Walden through his independent label, Tower to the People. This album marked a return to his roots as a singer-songwriter and pianist, showcasing a deeply personal collection of compositions that highlight his versatility beyond his well-known career as a high-profile producer and drummer. The project reflects his lifelong journey in music, blending elements of jazz, soul, and pop that have defined his diverse discography over several decades.

The album was designed to capture an intimate, acoustic-leaning aesthetic that emphasizes Walden's emotive vocal performance and intricate piano work. Unlike the heavily produced commercial hits he is often associated with, this release was received as an introspective look at his artistic evolution. Critics noted the project's earnest tone, characterizing it as a sincere homage to the foundational sounds that influenced his professional ascent in the 1970s and 80s.
