Where it came from
Released in 2012 on the Brighton-based independent label Tru Thoughts, 'I Never' stands as a definitive track from the Bamboos' album 'Medicine Man.' The Bamboos, led by guitarist Lance Ferguson, were central to the mid-2000s deep funk and soul revival, blending vintage production aesthetics with contemporary arrangements. This track was crafted to showcase the group's transition toward a more polished, crossover-friendly sound while maintaining the gritty, cinematic instrumentation that defined their earlier work.
The collaboration with Australian vocalist Daniel Merriweather was designed to bridge the gap between retro-soul authenticity and modern pop sensibilities. Ferguson sought a vocal performance that could navigate the track's driving rhythm section and brass-heavy textures with emotional gravity. Upon its release, the recording was well-received by critics and DJs in the soul and rare groove circuits, cementing the Bamboos' reputation for high-quality studio craftsmanship and cross-genre appeal within the global independent music community.
