Where it came from
Released in 2017 on Milk! Records, this self-titled album marked a significant transition for Jen Cloher, moving from an indie-folk sensibility to a more assertive, guitar-driven sound. The record was written during a period of personal and creative reflection, exploring themes of distance, the challenges of a long-distance relationship, and the intricacies of the Australian music industry. It serves as a stark, autobiographical document of Cloher's maturation as a songwriter.
The album's production features the tight, empathetic backing of her longtime band and partner Courtney Barnett, contributing to a cohesive and raw aesthetic. The design and presentation reflect the ethos of Milk! Records, which Cloher co-founded to foster an independent community of artists. Critically, the album was celebrated for its uncompromising honesty and lyrical precision, garnering Cloher widespread acclaim and an ARIA Award nomination for Best Rock Album.
