Jen Wood

Released in 2003 on the independent label Face Hand Shy, this self-titled CD represents a pivotal moment in Jen Wood’s transition from the prominent mid-nineties emo band Tattle Tale to a distinct solo career. Wood, a fixture of the Pacific Northwest music scene, crafted this collection as an exploration of delicate, piano-driven arrangements paired with her signature ethereal vocals. The record serves as a bridge between her early collaborative punk-influenced work and the more introspective, chamber-pop sensibilities that would define her later outputs.

The album’s design reflects the lo-fi and intimate aesthetic of the early 2000s independent folk-pop movement, focusing on a minimalist visual presentation that highlights the vulnerability of the songwriting. While the release remained a quiet success within underground circles, it was critically noted for its atmospheric textures and the maturity of its lyrical themes. It stands as a significant artifact of the independent label culture of the era, illustrating the move toward self-produced, highly personal songcraft that became a hallmark of Wood’s enduring influence on the indie-rock landscape.
