Where it came from
Released in 2015 through the London-based Strange Attractor Press, Jolly Lad is the musical companion to John Doran’s memoir of the same name. The album serves as an experimental soundscape reflecting the author's recovery and his complex relationship with his hometown of Wigan. By blending spoken word, field recordings, and diverse musical collaborations, the project aims to capture the psychogeography of the English north, moving beyond traditional songwriting to create an immersive, thematic narrative.
The album features a wide array of contributors, including British Sea Power, The Fall’s Adam Brennan, and Raikes Parade, among others. Doran, known for his work as a music journalist and editor, sought to translate the sensory experiences documented in his writing into audio form. The collection was received as a singular, idiosyncratic artifact that defies easy genre categorization, praised for its raw honesty and its commitment to exploring themes of addiction and cultural memory.
