Where it came from
Karikko represents the 2001 debut album by Finnish pianist and composer Kari Ikonen, released through the independent Fiasko Records label. This project emerged during a period of burgeoning activity in the Helsinki jazz scene, where Ikonen began to establish his reputation for blending traditional acoustic piano textures with modern, often introspective compositional structures.
The album reflects Ikonen’s early interest in the intersection of jazz improvisation and Nordic folk influences. Designed to showcase a trio format, the recording was met with positive attention from the Finnish music press, which recognized the work as an assured initial statement that paved the way for Ikonen’s subsequent evolution into one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Scandinavian jazz.
