Where it came from
La Théorie Du Gentil was released in 2012 under the independent label Compagnie Zany Corneto. Xavier Merlet, a French singer-songwriter and composer associated with the vibrant and eclectic alternative music scene in Bordeaux, crafted this record as a exploration of narrative-driven chanson. The album reflects a period where Merlet was actively blending theatrical storytelling with folk-inflected pop, focusing on intimate lyrical themes and arrangements that prioritized acoustic clarity.
The design of the album aligns with the aesthetic choices common to Merlet’s work during this era, often favoring minimalist or illustrative covers that emphasize the solitary nature of his songwriting. Within the context of his discography, the album is noted by critics for its understated production and the consistent, gentle tone of its compositions. It serves as a representative example of French independent production from the early 2010s, maintaining a dedicated following among fans of poetic, small-scale musical projects.
