Lamine Toure And Group Saloum

Released in 2005 on the Nomadic Wax label, this self-titled album serves as a definitive document of Lamine Touré’s fusion project, Group Saloum. The music was born from the vibrant intersection of West African Sabar percussion, originating from the Wolof people of Senegal, and the modern sensibilities of hip-hop and funk. Touré, a master percussionist, sought to bridge the rhythmic traditions of his heritage with the globalized sounds of contemporary urban music, creating a high-energy hybrid that captures the communal spirit of a traditional dance hall.

The album reflects the mission of Nomadic Wax, a label dedicated to amplifying international hip-hop and global music narratives. Lamine Touré’s approach to the percussion arrangements was designed to be both rhythmically complex and accessible, layering traditional talking drums and djembe patterns over a driving, danceable foundation. Upon its release, the project was recognized as an essential entry in the canon of contemporary Senegalese diaspora music, praised by world music enthusiasts for its technical prowess and its earnest effort to modernize ancestral rhythms for a new generation of listeners.
