Where it came from
Georges Bizet composed the incidental music for Alphonse Daudet’s play L'Arlésienne in 1872, later orchestrating the suites that would become staples of the Romantic orchestral repertoire. These works are celebrated for their evocative melodies and instrumental color, capturing the spirit of Provencal life. The suites were extracted and arranged by Bizet and his friend Ernest Guiraud, cementing their status as concert hall favorites long after the composer's passing.
This specific release under the Arpegio Music-Production label is representative of late-twentieth-century independent classical reissues. Labels like Arpegio frequently sought to provide accessible, high-fidelity interpretations of standard orchestral classics for the home listener. These collections generally aimed to preserve the integrity of Bizet’s orchestration while utilizing established regional orchestras to capture the dramatic flair essential to both the L'Arlésienne and Carmen suites.
