Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 1993 by the archival label Razor & Tie, this compilation focuses on the definitive peak of Bobby Womack’s solo career. Spanning the years 1968 to 1975, the collection captures the period when Womack transitioned from a prolific session guitarist and songwriter into a formidable soul artist in his own right, documenting his tenure with United Artists Records.

The curation of the album serves as a masterclass in the intersection of gritty soul, R&B, and nascent funk. By highlighting tracks that showcase Womack’s gravelly, emotive vocal delivery and his sophisticated grasp of rhythm, the release was instrumental in introducing his seminal early work to a new generation of listeners during the early 1990s soul revival.
