Where it came from
Released in 1998 by Discos Fuentes, this compilation serves as a curated retrospective of the foundational recordings by Juan Formell and Los Van Van. The collection highlights the group's pioneering role in the late 1960s and 1970s, during which Formell revolutionized Cuban music by blending traditional son with elements of rock, jazz, and American funk, famously creating the genre known as songo.
The album reflects the deliberate aesthetic of the 'songo' sound, characterized by intricate percussion interplay and Formell’s distinctive electric bass lines. These tracks emerged from a period of significant cultural experimentation in Havana, and the compilation was received as a definitive resource for listeners looking to trace the evolution of one of Cuba’s most enduring and influential dance orchestras.
