Where it came from
Released in 1997 on the Musica Del Sol label, Con Salsa Formell serves as a significant compilation showcasing the evolution of Juan Formell and Los Van Van. Formell founded the group in 1969, effectively revolutionizing Cuban music by integrating electronic elements, Western rock, and funk sensibilities into traditional son and changüí rhythms, a style he coined as songo.
This collection highlights the band's enduring ability to fuse complex musical arrangements with accessible, dance-oriented compositions. By the late 1990s, Los Van Van had solidified their reputation as the premier orchestra of Cuba, and releases such as this were curated to introduce their expansive catalog to broader international audiences during a period of renewed global interest in Cuban music.
