Provenance

Where it came from

Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special was released in 2020 as a companion to the Apple TV+ musical special of the same name. Conceived during the global pandemic as a way to provide comfort and holiday joy, the project served as a career retrospective for Carey, who has long been synonymous with the Christmas season due to the enduring popularity of her 1994 hit All I Want for Christmas Is You.

The soundtrack features a blend of traditional carols, gospel-infused arrangements, and contemporary pop collaborations, including an updated version of Oh Santa! featuring Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. Produced by Carey alongside a team of collaborators, the design and execution aimed to capture a lavish, Broadway-inspired aesthetic, receiving praise from critics for its vocal arrangements and production value while cementing Carey's status as a dominant cultural figure in holiday music.
