Where it came from
Released in 2020, this live recording captures the collaborative performance between Newfoundland-based folk musician Matthew Byrne and the acclaimed Lady Cove Women’s Choir. The project was born out of a desire to blend Byrne’s traditional balladry with the rich, choral textures of the choir, building on the vibrant folk music traditions of Atlantic Canada. The recording serves as a testament to the synergy between solo storytelling and communal vocal arrangement.
The album reflects a deliberate aesthetic choice to prioritize clarity and atmosphere, aiming to preserve the intimacy of the live concert experience. Designed to showcase the interplay between Byrne’s guitar work and the layered harmonies of the Lady Cove Women’s Choir, the production was received by folk enthusiasts as a significant contribution to contemporary maritime music, noted for its emotive delivery and reverence for the source material of traditional Newfoundland song.
